SOA Modernization of Carnegie Mellon University Student Information Systems
Abstract: Carnegie Mellon University, consistently ranked as one of the country's top universities, has embarked upon the execution of a SOA-based strategy for the modernization of its legacy Student Information Systems based on IBM WebSphere middleware and open source components. CMU's strategy includes the incremental development, deployment and integration of legacy components and new shared business services being developed in parallel by a consortium of universities through the Kuali Foundation and its Kuali Student project. CMU and Summa will present key aspects of our approach and the benefits of using IBM WebSphere Business Modeler and Process Server. We will also highlight the benefits, challenges and techniques applied in our incremental SOA-based modernization strategy focused on managing risk and cost containment.
Evaluating the Real TCO of WebSphere Application Foundation and Open Source Options
Abstract: With the economic challenges facing many businesses today, taking a careful look at cost is imperative. But what are the key factors in the total cost of ownership (TCO) in JEE application server environments? What are the differences between IBM WebSphere Application Server and Open Source application servers that affect TCO over the long haul? How can we target these factors to take advantage of new product features and best practices to save time and money? In this session, a panel of customers will share best practices from their real life experiences on these questions. Summa - an IBM Business Partner will share findings from a comparative TCO study of WAS vs. Open Source application servers. The session will highlight some cost-saving strategies for lowering operating and energy costs, such as the use of application and server virtualization, automation of administrative tasks, increasing application performance and reliability.
